Throwback Thursdays

Those Magic TV Moments…

Martin Proposing to Gina

Thursday nights used to be TV night in the late 80s and early 90s. If it wasn’t The Cosby Show and A Different World on NBC keeping us glued to our tubes it was Martin , Living Single and New York Undercover on Fox. This strike has me nostalgic like crazy and I started to think about how funny Martin Lawrence's show used to be before he went crazy and folks quit and sued for sexual harassment… Anyway...

Remember when Martin proposed to Gina? The first proposal wasn’t romantic at all. The brother felt a little pressured and put his foot in his mouth big time. But it was the funniest proposal ever and provided the classic lines: “Okay fine! Fine, baby, Gina… Your little plan worked. You plotted and you schemed and clank-clank you finally got me, Gina. Okay... fine… Gina, I will marry you! Damn! I mean are you happy now?” Probably not the proposal every girl dreams of, huh? I guess having her man compare being married to her as being handcuffed and on lockdown didn't cut it. Because Gina left Martin and he had to work to get her back.

Sounds like a romance novel to me… Anyway…

In the second proposal the brother pulled out all the stops and even got Brian McKnight to sing to her. It was cute. But to me the first proposal will always be the true classic. It might not be romantic, but it was hella funny… “Clank-Clank…”

  1. That was one show I didn't really watch. I couldn't fathom why an intelligent woman like Gina who had a professional job would hook up with an idiot like Martin. What I did like were the other characters he played, especially Shanaynay.

  3. Gwyneth,

Martin was actually funny at one time, then when he got on that OOOOWEEEE! (from "Run and Tell Dat") everything went downhill. They didn't even have a satisfactory ending of the series. We never found out what Tommy did for a living...lol.

  4. Chicki ~ Good point. I think I was able to buy into it because I never really bought into Gina being smart. I don't know why. I think it's because I really like Pam better and Pam always seemed smarter and since she was supposed to be Gina's assistant... And I really liked the Shanaynay character too. LOL. I used to think, they need to have Shanaynay on more often. And then I'd remember he was her. LOL.

Angelia ~ New York Undercover was the show!

Tyhitia ~ LOL on that OOOOWEEE! I didn't like Run and Tell Dat as much as You So Crazy . But it had some funny moments. You are so right, they never did tell us what Tommy did for a living. "Tommy, you ain't got no job!" LOL.

Okay my all time favorite was his mother's bird. "Gina, you killed my momma bird!" Dead. LOL.

  7. Genesis ~ The first proposal is the classic... Clank-clank... I crack up every time I hear it.

Don~ We sure didn't know how good we had it. You're right he came with it on the second proposal. He needed to after the way he jacked up the first time. LOL.

  8. I vote for the first proposal. I could find humor in the show, and I too thought Pam was the smarter, more likeable character. This was one of those shows that if you caught it fine, but I wasn't recording it if we weren't home. Then, there's always that part of me that tries to give an AA show at least a chance, 'cuz they're so few in number.

I drew the line at that Martian show that "Homeboys in Outer Space" with Flex Alexander back in the late '80s. Useless.

Martin is crazy...the show still makes me laugh even after all these years.
Why does the security guard down at Save a Lot remind me of Mr "Jerome's in the house" from Martin. And truth be told, he thinks he's as fly...ROFLMAO

  11. Patricia ~ You took me back with Homeboys in Outer Space . I have to say, as much as I try to support black shows, I had to leave that one alone. LOL. You're right it was useless.

    Don ~ Yep! :-)

Shelia ~ LOL. "I say Jerome in the house, I say Jerome in hi-hi-house... shut ya mouth..." "I'm an original Playa from the Hemi-la-yas." Girl, you just reminding me of how funny Martin was. Those characters were off the chain.
